A proper fraction has a numerator smaller than the denominator (for example, 3/5). An improper fraction has a numerator greater than or equal to the denominator (for example, 7/4).

Multiply the whole part by the denominator and add the numerator. For example, 2³⁄₄ = (2×4+3)/4 = 11/4.
